Yesterday, was one of those days I felt energized to do what I love doing most. I went shopping on foot. I still go on foot but today, I was intending to walk all the way from the supermarket till home with a bag full of shopping.
I did go. I got foodstuffs, fruits, yogurt, diapers, vegetables and anything that I could think of that was needed in the house.
My trolley was full and I wasn’t really keen on their weight. I didn’t think that their weight would almost be unbearable – largely unbearable. I paid, got packed for and left.
At first the weight was manageable, the first steps were steady for me, but as I keep going, the weight of my shopping bag began slowing me down. Its weight bogged me down.
I was slowly getting drained and my energy level quickly dropped. I was getting tired and my arms began hurting. My back bent so much as it supported the weight of the luggage.
It was an excruciatingly long hard walk back home.
I regretted every part of it. I didn’t see the beauty of the Lord filling my basket. I didn’t think of it as a divine provision much less having a hassle free week of shopping.
I just wanted the weight off me. The worst is that no one was bothered by the strain I seemed to think it was so obviously detected. I didn’t want to put it down either because lifting it again would be a toll order.
What God provided then, was a cloud that shielded me from the scorching rays – it was a welcome comfort.
I bore the unbearable weight until I got home.
In the middle of that anguish, I heard the silent whisper. The Lord reminded me of His word.
Matthew 11:28- 30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Could you possibly be like me?
That you want to enjoy your journey to heaven, a place where Jesus calls it our eternal home, a place of tranquility, and the ultimate peace of God – but the journey is becoming unbearable?
You are not enjoying any bit of your Christian walk because of the burden(s) you carry?
20 years on, you have grudges against some people. You are still angry at someone for something they did to you 10 years ago?
You do not forgive thinking that you are punishing your offender, yet your offender walks free, happy and is living life to the fullest, and your burden gets heavier by the day.
You bear resentment and bitterness against people who have never done anything wrong to you just because they seem to be doing better – financially, socially, maybe in their marriage. You simply hate them for nothing. Yet another burden.
You are always jealous of people, full of envy and spite. You never see any beauty in anyone or anything. Yet another burden you bear.
You put so much expectations on people that it shifts your focus from the real source – who is God. – Proverbs 29:25. Yet another burden you bear.
You are heavy laden in every area of your life.
As you keep walking, you expect the people around you to notice that you are straining, yet they continue on with their businesses. How do you expect them to notice, yet you seem “to be well aware of what you are carrying?”
You set yourself up to carry the burden(s).
But Jesus is reminding you today of His sweet relieve. He says this… “Come to me all you who are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”
The walk of faith can never be sweet nor fulfilling if you walk with a burden tied round your back. You will not enjoy His presence, His grace, His peace, His unconditional love if you keep walking with that burden weighing down on your already bent shoulders!
Give it to Christ. Take on His yoke. His yoke is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost! His yoke is light! (Romans 14:17)
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. (Ephesians 4:31)
The Bible says in Ephesians 4:22-23
Get rid of your old self, which made you live as you used to – the old self that was being destroyed by its deceitful desires. Your hearts and minds must be made completely new, and you must put on the new self, which is created in God’s likeness and reveals itself in the true life that is upright and holy.
It means that you have to CONSCIOUSLY DECIDE TO GET RID…of that old self, the burdens you bear, the sins that easily beset you and PUT ON…a new self. It’s a walk full of all intentionality!
No one will make you put the burden down save for yourself.
Christ is there, telling you every day, “C’mon, give me this burden, take on mine! It’s lighter!” “It will give you the needed rest!” – Matthew 11:28
“Put down the bitterness, see no one cares for you as much as I do! Cast those cares to me!” –Psalms 55:22
Can you imagine someone telling you, “Let me help you with this luggage!” How fulfilling!
Have the courage of humility to trust him to take care of your life. He cares! Let him have your burden!

And do you know what happens? The peace of God reigns in your heart! You will enjoy your walk of faith! You will be free!
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, let your request be made known to God. And the peace of God which passes all comprehension will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6
