1st Kings 12:26
Jeroboam [doubted God’s promise to him and] said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will return to the house of David.
I got some sport shoes, a gym gear and dumbbells that Johnny bought me after our pregnancy to help me tone back.
Using them around the house was easy. Then I got overly ambitious and decided to be carrying them with me together with every other luggage wherever I went – they look good too you know!
Johnny advised me against it. He kept saying “Why do you need all this? You need to unpack somethings Hunnie, please unpack.”
But I always had my “What ifs.”
“What if I just get some free time to lift them up?” “What if I need the shoes?” “What if the baby sleeps and I need to do a couple of sit-ups?” I told myself and also told Johnny as I psyched myself up for the “bounce back journey.”
Day one, the ambition sustained the weight of the bag I had on me. But as I kept carrying the bag, on consecutive days, the weight was more than I could bear. Johnny was always kind to help me out, relieving me of the weight of those bags – the weight that I could have well afforded to keep off. How dumb of me, don’t you think so?
But that’s how we are – most of us. We carry the weight of doubt with us that makes us not believe in the Lord entirely.
We carry “What ifs” with us just as I did.
What if I don’t get married by 30?
What if I don’t get a child immediately?
What if he leaves me for another woman?
What if she will cheat on me once I lose my job?
What if I don’t get the job?
All this “what ifs” drive us into sin just as Jeroboam later did.
He raised ungodly altars for the Israelites just because he did not trust the Lord enough with the promise of ruling over Israel. He chose priests from all people who were not of the sons and descendants of Levi, and offered sacrifices on those altars. The Lord struck Jeroboam ‘s arm for his sins!
The Bible asks us to repent sins of doubt. Doubt is more than enough to drive you to sin.!
Doubt will make to sacrifice your dignity to get a promotion. Doubt will drive you to settle just because the wait seems too long – and settling most times, is always our own permissive will. Doubt will cause you to invoke witchcraft and sorcery to get a child, over trusting in the Lord who can give you a child in his time.
Doubt is a sin that easily moves us from a point of grace to a point of self will.
Lay aside the sin of doubt.
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
Scream out to your doubt about a God bigger than you circumstances. Put down the “What ifs” and take on the shield of Faith that you may quench the fiery darts of doubt!
