In Marriage Devotionals, Reflections of My Soul

MAKE CHRIST YOUR IDENTITY.

How many of us after having a nice hair, striking an unimaginable business deal, getting a new house or a car, feel invincible? I know I do. I almost feel like I can take on the next giant down.

But then life throws arrows at us, and the cycle begins again.  The society we live in has little or nothing to say about grace.

It emphasizes more on having material gains, taking, taking and looking out for yourself first. While it’s good to be able to take care of yourself, having or placing your confidence in things or people is perhaps one of the most egregious things one can do.

It bears resentments and inevitably give root to bitterness.

But here is a great truth. Placing your confidence, trust and having your identity in Christ shields you from all external pressures. The Bible says in Psalms 46:1 that God is our refuge and strength [mighty and impenetrable], A very present and well-proved help in trouble.

I guess the biggest threshold of trouble comes from putting our eggs in the wrong tray.

We think the world will love us as long as we please it. We run around proving our worth to people who by the way, don’t and will never care.

But amidst all these crazy voices around us, there is a refuge. Our Lord God almighty who was, is, and is to come. He tells us to run to Him for help when in trouble. How great is our Lord that when trouble looms, He has promised a way out through His word!

Speak the word over your life! His word is our identity!

Meditate on His truth. It’s more than just sitting down in the corner of your living room with a note book and a Bible open. The word meditate comes from the Hebrew word hagah which means to mutter.

Ask yourself, what do you mutter most the whole day?

Some of you complain about their jobs. Others their spouses, others the country, the president, the world. Most of us have nothing positive to mutter about. We grumble and complain and repeat it as soon as we are awake.

But here is what the Word says that society doesn’t say – make the Lord your refuge, speak His Word and he will be your identity!

Does that mean that circumstances will change? Sometimes they do, sometimes they simply don’t because the Lord wants to change you and the perspective you hold.

If you are not willing to learn and ask of the Lord what am I getting out of this, you will keep complaining till kingdom comes!

Make the Lord your strength and identity. He might not change your circumstance, but He will change your perception and perspective. He will renew your mind and cause you to see things His way!

Society will speak of safe sex, but you will speak about abstinence and waiting to have sex in the confines of marriage.

Society will speak of friends with benefits, but you will speak about godly and intentional dating, walking with a godly couple who will infuse you with the wisdom they have gotten from the Lord.

Society will speak of open marriages, but you will speak of a godly covenantal marriage. One that regards boundaries and upholds the marriage bed with honor.

Society will speak of sponsors and side chics and casual flings, but you will speak about waiting on the Lord no matter how long it may tarry.

You will speak of building together with your spouse, just as the Word says – not being a strange woman who destroys another woman’s home.

Society will speak of being a “man” who has to make a woman come under his terms and conditions – as if it’s a contract, but you will speak of loving your wife faithfully, with all you got, and living in understanding with her.

Society will speak of being strong enough to tell your husband off, do your own projects and disregard your husband’s opinion -after all, he doesn’t get it, and you are the one bringing in the money, but you will speak about respecting your husband, regarding his opinion even though they differ and respectfully addressing him without demeaning him.

There’s a cost in making Christ your identity. Be ready to go all out for Jesus! No grey areas!
