In Marriage Matters, Our Journey, Parenting

PRAYING FOR OUR CHILDREN; PART 1 – THE HEAD.

PRAYING FOR OUR CHILDREN – [HEAD, SHOULDER, KNEES and TOES song…]

We spent a couple of weeks with my hubby without our DM and it was very intentional. See, there are things one keeps learning in marriage and it would require some hard decisions if you’re to climb up the next level together. So we had to stick through the tight schedules together, still make time for our child and make time for us too.

Marriage is indeed work, hard work.

That notwithstanding, one thing we wanted to do together was to nurture our child before her next transition. Not that we don’t do it every day, but we wanted to really soak in her world without asking what we always do from work in the evening, “what did you do today?”

In just a couple of days, we knew new characters like Sky, Lightning McQueen, Chase, Pikachu, Combo, Gus, Mo, got to have a taste of Frozen 2, run up and down and more. We got silly, way too silly, and we got creative too. However, as day progressed on, it hit me so hard, that our little girl would be transiting to playgroup.

Well, transitions, especially parenting transitions have had me blot up in tears. Weaning her off from breastfeeding made me cry. Now school! I thank the Lord that Johnny understands how large and functional my tear glands are.

I shared with him my feelings and emotions and it was comforting to know that he understood me, yet so assuring that the Lord has her back.

Those weeks taught me a lot about myself, our marriage and parenting. As much as we were always on the watch, training and guiding her, much was still left unfiltered.

This is the reality and we cannot shake it away. Social media is here to stay and kids more than ever, are being bombarded with social media pressure that makes their identities so fragile and supple.

Parents, apart from the cute pictures we post online of our children, we need to plumb in deeper to their core. We need to pray for our children. We need to speak words of life to them. We need to cut them off from the cords of generational curses and words spoken naught by them that were before us.

We need to tackle parenting head on with the sword of the spirit which is the word of the Lord – Ephesians 6:17.

Instead of fretting, I felt the quickening of the HolySpirit to our pour my concerns, fears, and uncertainties of our next step. It’s not like we would stop doing our part, of teaching and training our child in the ways of the Lord- Proverbs 22:6, but that the Lord had the ultimate weight of guiding, protecting, and leading her in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake-not ours.

We need to pray for our children “HEAD SHOULDER KNEESS and TOES song” and this is what the Lord wants us to begin… Would you care to join me?

DAY 1: THE HEAD.

Did you know that seven weeks into a pregnancy, or five weeks after conception, the baby’s brain and face begin to grow? Basically this means that the head is a very integral part of our bodies. We cannot live without our heads! Literally or figuratively.

As Johnny and I sat down to watch her cartoons and animations, we couldn’t help but discuss how our kids’ lives have changed so drastically due to social media. I mean we didn’t grow up having all these programs and animations.

However, as much as social media has created great spaces for individual expressions, the devil prowls too in these murky grounds. He is not a respecter of persons and children are his easy targets. But the Lord who gives us gifts of children, provides for us the tools of spiritual warfare against the devil’s arrows of self-doubt, self-absorption, indulgence and all that could fill them up.

The battle of their minds has to be won and it begins by instilling godliness in them, teaching them about the helmet of salvation.

Ephesians 6:17 instructs us to put on the whole armor of God and to “take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

In combat, soldiers always suit up for battle, and the helmet is a vital piece of their armor. Without the helmet, they risk death! How could anyone operate the rest of the weapons whilst dead?

If you haven’t prayed for salvation upon your child, I urge you too. You may tell me that they actually don’t understand anything about it, but I can assure you their spirits do. The spirit of a human being is never tied to its age, and what you speak to them, is life.

Teach them about Christ and the cross and what He did for us. Explain why He died on the cross and how that frees us from the bondage of sins. Explain to them in words that are simple yet easy to grasp at their age. Illustrations do great in explaining and Bible apps for kids too!

The devil targets their young minds to corrupt every beautiful truth that the Lord has placed before us. Do your part. Do not be afraid of the future. The future belongs to the Lord.

Worrying about tomorrow and how they will turn out forfeits you the peace of today, yet the Lord promised us His peace.

Let us pray that our children to know the Lord as young as they are and take the next step of teaching them about Christ. That they will be disciples of Christ, boldly proclaiming Christ without fear or trepidation.

Trust in the Lord to parent your child, He is the ultimate parent running on the unlimited version of their soul food.

Action:

Find time and sit your child down. With colorful illustrations or a Bible app, explain to them about Jesus without being way too complicated. Answer any questions they could ask without being agitated – basically, go down to their level.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus,

I thank you for the gift of our children [Name them]. Lord as they transitions through various stages of their lives, I plead the blood of Jesus upon them.

I take power and authority according to your Word Lord, and refuse every word that could be uttered against them from their teachers, fellow classmates, words that could sip though them from various social media sites, any word against the promises over their lives. Lord this day, I render them powerless in the name of Jesus.

Lord protect their minds from negative words, and anything that could influence their image negatively.

May they know you Jesus and the power of your Salvation.

Give us the grace to parent them in your ways, above all, teach us the loving grace of being a parent like you Father.

We love you Jesus! In Jesus name.

Amen.
