DAY 18: HE WILL LIVE WITH ME IN UNDERSTANDING
1st Peter 3:7
In the same way, you husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone physically weaker, since she is a woman. Show her honor and respect as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered or ineffective.
The Bible admonishes a husband to live in understanding with his wife. This means that a husband should live with great gentleness, tact, and with an intelligent regard for the marriage he has and the wife he has.
He is to regard her with honour and respect as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that his prayers will not be hindered or ineffective.
Living in understanding with his wife will definitely help him pray since he will approach the throne of God without hypocrisy. It’s hypocritical and a facade for a husband to say that he’s deep with God, knows God or his prayers avail much if he’s not living right with his wife.
A husband should make a deliberate EFFORT to understand his wife so as to know her needs and what she needs from her him.
There has to be a special solicitousness of what she needs. No husband should think that his marriage will thrive without bestowing honor to his wife.
To take the time to develop and maintain a good marriage is God’s will; it is serving God; it is a spiritual activity pleasing in God’s sight.
To live in understanding with his wife, means to ‘yada his ezer.’ To know the wife. No wonder the biblical term for sexual love is to “know.”
There’s more than just having a sexual experience in marriage. It goes deeper to the word KNOW. This is more than just knowing her name. It’s going beyond what is physically seen and plumb deeper into the unseen.
A husband should have a plenty of cognitive room for the marriage and his wife’s world too.
He shouldn’t remain static with what he knew then about her, but constantly adapt to the changes in the marriage and her life too and update that information within himself.
This is a man who asks why she’s skipped her favourite dessert yet she loved it, 3 months back. A man who remembers the dates that are important to her. A man who asks her obvious questions like, “how are you feeling today?” and doesn’t assume that he knows her status because she woke up smiling.
This is a husband who updates his information upfront when the wife quips, “I love that color of dress, duvet or couch.”
He knows why she doesn’t like using a certain route to work, or what dressing she likes on her eggs.
He knows, or makes an effort to understand what she means when she says, “ok”, “Okkkkaayyy”, “K”, Ooooooookay” and “Okay.”
For all these to happen, it requires a consistencial effort from a husband through the power of the Holy Spirit.
To a husband who doesn’t want to know the wife this seems much. But to a husband who is keen on knowing his wife, this is a joyous journey together.
Unraveling what is placed before them now, while being hopeful for the future together.
We need to pray that God will stir in them the wonder of knowing us.
That God will give them an insight of “how to” live with us in gentleness, love, understanding and grace. After all, it’s to benefit their prayer life.
Heavenly Father in Jesus name I thank you for my husband. Lord you have commanded him to live in understanding with me. I know living with a fellow human being isn’t deviod of hard moments and challenges.
I pray that you will help him be consistent in pursuing knowledge of me. Help him live with me in gentleness, love, faithfulness and grace.
Teach him to know me.
Teach him to know my dreams.Teach him to know my short term and long term goals. Teach him to be in touch with my hopes.Teach him to know me and consider me as a fellow heir of grace, bestowing honour to me.
In Jesus name I pray,Amen
