A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
This type of a man reminds me of a song that stood out for me about a decade ago or more.
It was the theme song to one of the most hilarious family comedy show that aired then – Malcolm in the Middle.
The lyrics were, “Yes, no, maybe, I don’t know.” “Can you repeat the question?”
True to form to some type of people. The double minded. A yes, no, maybe type of person. A person who cannot stick to his or her decisions. A person with no solid stand.
The unreliable, undependable, shaky, un-grounded, more like a reed. Easily bent, easily broken, easily led astray because they cannot stand by their word.
No wonder Jesus had to pray for Peter, for the devil was already on his case. He was double minded.
The double minded man is next on line on the strange woman’s list.
An indecisive man, without any other easier term, is double-minded. He cannot make a decision and stick to it! He cannot make a vow and stick to it, however hard it get. He cannot be trusted because he too cannot trust his own decisions.
You see, a man is defined by his staying power. By this, i mean, sticking to his words too. Even if it leads him to an abattoir. Double mindedness is a stinking character, and it ranks out it’s bad odor on anything he wants to do. He is unstable in not just one, but ALL his ways.
By ALL i mean his marriage included. His vows included.
Double mindedness keeps you non committal.
You are neither here nor there. You stand up for anything, not your personal conviction. You are easily swayed by opinions, doctrines, ideologies, eccentricities. You are easily moved, easily overtaken, easily broken.
The seed that was sown when sin entered the perfect garden of Eden through one man, was that of double mindedness.
The devil knows that as long as your husband is sitting on the fence, grey, tepid, he has his strings attached to his ankles. He could demand anything from him anytime, and has the legal ground to.
He could demand that he lowers his guards down on his standards with regards to faithfulness, after all, he doesn’t have clear boundaries.
He could demand that he overworks himself into a burnout, even depression, after all, he cannot say, “that’s enough for now.”
He could demand that he takes on all the requests thrown at him, in the name of “being helpful”, after all, he cannot say, “No!”
He could demand an overt or subtle misuse of his stewardship in resources, after all, he cannot say, “I might not have it at this time.”
Such is the gravity of being a double minded person.
An indecisive man has heart that Jesus terms as, an unfaithful heart, because he is person who wills two things at the same time.
James 4:8 says, Come close to God [with a contrite heart] and He will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; and purify your [unfaithful] hearts, you double-minded [people].
A double minded person is with a half-and-half heart that wants to partake from the Lord’s table, but unwilling to strip down naked the worldly garments.
A heart that wants to hope in God, but easily buys itself into quick fixes.
A heart that thirsts for Christ, but drowns itself in worldly pleasures.
A heart that wants to die to self, but dines at the table of hedonism.
We should pray that our husbands will not parade to the world a circus of pretense that they are sons of God, yet, we are never willing to walk on the narrow path.
We should pray that they will seek to purify their hearts.
We should pray that our husbands will die to their hedonistic desires and PUT ASIDE every weight and sin that easily entangles them and follow the Lord.
We should pray that their Yes will be Yes and their No will be No!_Matthew 5:37.
That they will purpose as Moses did and said, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” Exodus 33:15
That they will decide as David did, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”Psalms 119:11
That they will decide as Job did, “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look at a young woman. “Job 31:1
That they will purpose like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” Daniel 3:17-18
That they will do as Daniel did, “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.” Daniel 1:8
That they will say like Joshua did, “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15
That they will do as Jesus taught, “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. Matthew 5:29-30
… and trust Jesus to lead their decision making…and never be double minded in their ways.
