Day 9
That we will have the courage to fight for our marriages…PART 1
Nehemiah 4

But it so happened, when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, that he was furious and very indignant, and mocked the Jews. And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day?
Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish; stones that are burned?” Now Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, “Whatever they build, if even a fox goes up on it, he will break down their stone wall.”

Now this story begins with Nehemiah wanting to re-build the wall of Jerusalem. But then Sanballat and Tobiah were very furious and very indignant.
They intimidated, discouraged and mocked them for the very thing they wanted to do.
They said, “these feeble Jews … Whatever they build, even if a fox goes up on it, he will break down their stone wall.”
Imagine the discouragement. Imagine being called FEEBLE, and WEAK when about to undertake an important task.
BUT THEN…Nehemiah did what was unexpected.
He did not answer back. He PRAYED
Nehemiah 4:4-5 Hear, O our God, for we are despised; turn their reproach on their own heads, and give them as plunder to a land of captivity! Do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You; for they have provoked You to anger before the builders.
And God answered him by giving them a MIND TO WORK.
Nehemiah 4:6 So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.
Still, Sanballat and Tobiah conspired to attack the wall and create confusion as the Bible says in
Nehemiah 4:7-8 Now it happened, when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being restored and the gaps were beginning to be closed, that they became very angry, and all of them conspired together to come and attack Jerusalem and create confusion.
Again Nehemiah did what needed to be done. HE PRAYED AND SET WATCH, DAY AND NIGHT.
Nehemiah 4:9 Nevertheless, we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night.
Let’s first of all deal with this. Our marriages face opposition day and night. Not everyone is happy when they see a husband and wife thriving.
Positive marriages are criticized as show off. People would rather see you in a failed marriage.
At least that will soothe their hurting souls. How sad that we can be that self-centered!
The biggest of them all is discouragement and scorn. “Oh why are you putting up your pictures, give us a break!” “Why do you keep praising him?” “Why do you keep talking about your wife?” “The way he speaks about his wife too often- she must have gone to a witch-doctor!”
I say in Jesus name put them up! I say in Jesus name shout it on top of the mountain that marriages thrive!
Do not be discouraged by outward forces that seem to take pleasure in negativity. People will be happy and post a 1000 comments if you say that your marriage is under attack.
DO NOT be discouraged as much as it will be there. Expect it, it will be there.
Modern Sanballat and Tobiah are there and it’s okay. You know why? God is pushing you to pray.
To engage in spiritual warfare and quench all the negative tongues and arrows directed against you and your marriage!
Just like Nehemiah, God is training your hands to war. GOD IS TRAINING YOUR HANDS TO BEND THE BOW AND SCALE THE WALLS!
God is training you to cover your family and your spouse. Do not be discouraged by all the negative tongues and forces that seem to outshine the positive voices.
After prayer of Nehemiah, the Bible says that THE LORD GAVE THEM A MIND TO WORK.
In prayer, the Lord gives you both ONE MIND.
They deliberately decided to set watch to keep the attackers away.
You have set watch, day and night.
Do not give the devil a loophole to get into your marriage. Be on guard Mr.
Run away from that lady who is working so hard to get your attention. Shut down all those private chats and do not give the enemy a chance.
Affairs don’t start in bed, they start simple – a text, a chat, a “hello.”
Mrs. Stop working so hard to get that man’s approval in office. Do not open your heart to that man who is not your husband.
No he’s not your best friend and there is nothing like that in marriage. It’s either you choose him or your husband. You cannot share a bed with someone but be emotionally vulnerable to another. That is unfaithfulness.
Be on guard and watch out for your marriage day and night. What do i mean by watching out? I don’t mean snooping or trailing your husband or wife.
I mean being prayerful and talking out whatever bothers your marriage and more so, if either of you is becoming too familiar with someone of the opposite sex. And well, it need not get there.
Do your part – both of you. If you find another man coming too close to you, set your boundaries right and tell him that you cannot chat him or be his confidant. It’s that simple. If you feel a certain lady is getting too close or trying to get your attention, set your boundaries right.
Tell her to quit chatting with you or sliding into your DM. Keep your wife in copy and most of all, be accountable to each other. That is how you set watch – day and night.
Above all, pray that the hedge of the fire of the Holy spirit will protect your spouse everywhere.
Lord Jesus,
We thank you for this day that your word has encouraged us to fight for our marriages and not get discouraged by the voices of Sanballat and Tobiah.
Help us to keep watch, day and night and be vulnerable to each other.
We rebuke every attack directed against us from whichever quarters.
We take power and authority against every demonic forces against our marriage and family Lord.
Fill our mouths with praises for watch other and help us love each other unrelentingly.
