One of my best legends is the story Homer the poet wrote years back. The legend of the Odyssey. He talked about the Sirens who were mythical beautiful creatures portrayed as seductive attractive women. They lured and ensnared the sailors with their enchanting music and hypnotizing voices.
After being warned by Circe, Odysseus vowed to protect his sailors. Odysseus orders his men to plug their ears with beeswax.
He on the other hand, curious to know what the Sirens sounded like, he asked to be bound tightly to the mast and leave him bound no matter how much he pleaded and begged to be released.
As they sailed, he heard the voice of the Sirens, crying out to him,
“Oh stay, O pride of Greece! Ulysses stay! Oh cease thy course, and listen to our lay! Blest is the man ordained our voice to hear, the song instructs the soul, and charms the ear. Approach! Thy soul shall into raptures rise! Approach! And learn new wisdom from the wise! We know whate’er the kings of mighty name achieved at Ilion in the field of fame; Whate’er beneath the sun’s bright journey lies. Oh stay, and learn new wisdom from the wise!”
The Sirens, typify the world hyperbole in regards to SEX. Promising a larger than life kind of return.
SEX according to the world, means that you are loved and if you are not sleeping with someone it simply means that you are boring, judging everyone who is – after all, virginity isn’t as fashionable after all! Right?
In the case of Odysseus, Sirens promised wisdom. In the case of the world, SEX means love. But their message was deceptive then, and the message the world gives about SEX, is still deceptive. If Odysseus detoured from his journey and approached the Sirens, they would have all died.
He may have enjoyed the pleasure of the Sirens’ music for a short time, but the experience would have been short lived. His fate would be bond to death.
SEX is not any different! Similar to the songs of the Sirens, SEX gives the promise of pleasure and enjoyment. It promises to give you the desires and longings of your heart, that “Thy soul shall into raptures rise!” If SEX didn’t make those promises, it would not be tempting! It only asks that you “cease thy course” and “approach!”: Cease from the race of faith, cease you’re your testimony of salvation, cease to be “boring”, let lose a bit, from the course that God has marked out for you; from your walk with Christ; and take another path, a seemingly more pleasurable one – Have SEX.
How did Odysseus and his men successfully battle the Sirens’ seduction? Odysseus was tied to the mast, and his sailors plugged their ears with beeswax. From this, we can glean two lessons in battling temptation. One is to eliminate our ability to respond to temptation. Jesus put it this way (Matthew 5:29-30):
FIRST: If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Such a principle was adopted by Odysseus. Although he could hear the Sirens’ voice and was tempted, he had no ability to yield to the temptation. The desire was still there, but he, being roped to the mast of the ship, was unable to respond to it.
Similarly, the follower of Christ ought to also abide by this principle: If there is something in your life that is consistently presenting opportunity for you to yield to temptation, get rid of it if at all possible!
Odysseus had been warned by Circe not to “trust thy virtue to the enchanting sound.” Often, the character of temptation is such that we must flee from temptation rather than engage in hand-to-hand combat with it. Joseph exercised this principle when he run from Potiphars’ wife when she attempted to seduce him to sleep with her.
SECONDLY: The second lesson is that plugging our ears, so that we do not hear temptations’ seductive music, is an effective way to gain victory.
Take care to guard your senses, particularly your eyes and ears. There is so much sensual imagery around today that the need to protect one’s eyes is more important now than ever before.
Take care of what you see. Take care of what you hear. If you feed your spirit with sexually explicit stuff, it will crave for that. For what the body does, affects the soul.
Just as C.S Lewis said, it you are much more likely to make a man a sound drunkard by pressing drink on him as an anodyne when he is dull and weary than by encouraging him to use it as a means of merriment among his friends when he is happy and expansive.
Pleasure is good! Every good and perfect gift comes from the Lord, the Father of lights with whom there are no variableness. James 1:7.
Pleasure is not the devil’s invention. It’s God’s creation! He made the pleasures: all our research so far has not enabled us to produce one. All the devil can do is to encourage the humans to take the pleasures which God has produced, at times, or in ways, or in degrees, which He has forbidden.
SEX without intimacy, is an ever increasing craving for an ever diminishing pleasure. That is the devil’s formula.
Titus 2: 11-13
For the grace of God has appeared with salvation for all people, instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, while we wait for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
“Because I said so” is not very persuasive to five-year-old children throwing a temper tantrum, and “because I said so” is not very effective with twenty-five-year-old college students in bed with one another.
What is needed in its place is a worldview built around the proposition that “God said so.”
Our calling is not merely to parrot those words, but to set forth a biblical truth
that takes seriously the gracious prescriptions and the gracious prohibitions of our holy and yet loving God.
Because “God said so”, chastity is possible!
Because “God said do”, find your worth in Him!
Because “God said so”, do not lose the language of Love through cheap SEX!
Because “God says so”, we can overcome the world!
Because GOD SAYS SO!
