PSALM 23 – VERSE 6
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
As we come to the end of this beautiful Psalm, the Lord underscores His great love to us by saying this: goodness and mercy shall follow us…ALL…the days of our life.
God is not only great, but He is good to us too.
If He is good, then His goodness to us isn’t dented to us because of certain impending circumstances. It follows us, it’s all though. We may be tempted to doubt His goodness when things aren’t working our way, and label Him as ‘good’ when all is moving on well. But we need to remember, His goodness, is His nature. He is a good God and therefore works out all for our good- even when our humanness limits us to the unseen.
David also states that “mercy” follows him. Mercy is given to undeserving people. It’s when we are least deserving, that we need His mercies more. Even when moving through the continuum of faithlessness to faithfulness, He is still a constant. He remains faithful to us.
So these two, goodness and mercy follow us. They remain with us, all the days of our lies. They never cease, they never stop.
They trail us wherever we go, through whichever season we are in, in whatever gruesome circumstance we find ourselves in, or have moments of perfect merriment, His goodness and mercies are new every morning. It’s because of His mercies that we are not consumed.
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
This conscientious nature of our God should give us the security we need from the worldly pleasures. He is there with us, constantly showing us with His undying love, goodness and mercy.
That gives me confidence to move, knowing that am loved, and His goodness is riveted upon me, even infused in me by the one who is Faithful.
And He is not just faithful today, but “all the days of [my] life.” There will not be a single day that the Lord will withhold His goodness upon me since am not as per or perfect. He knows am human, He knows we are human and that is why He calls upon us to be the sheep that need His guidance, constantly.
By nature, sheep are dense, foolish even obstinate, but that is His specialty. He can teach us, train us, guide us, comfort us, restore us, provide for us, shield us, anoint us, bless us, bloom us, if we be as sheep and Him, our shepherd.
He can restore our marriages, He can keep us and safely guide our way. Our trust is not on our spouses, our marriage whether they are thriving or not, our trust should be on the Shepherd first.
Thank you for reminding me that your goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. My life includes my marriage, my family, my children, my career, my calling, our ministry, my walk, my sleep, my eating, my drinking, my driving, my sleeping –my life. Jesus, thank you for your goodness will never cease to be abundant in my life.
I need you to guide me, teach me, walk with me, uphold me and bless me.
Jesus thank you for being my Shepherd.
