Today is one of those overwhelming days. There are some long days, and there are overwhelming days in this land of parenting.

Today was one of those days I looked at my disheveled self and I thought, “WOW! Does it ever get any easier?”

Toys everywhere, diaper changes, mommy cries, “mommy help me” yells, does it get any easier.

Toilet moments are my quiet moments, at least. I can have 3 minutes of uninterrupted time before I get yet another “momma summon.”

I took a deep breath in, asking Christ for more grace yet again. I needed it.

His Word came alive in me

I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.” John 13:15

NLT

The tasks of motherhood can sometimes take on an oppressive quality, from one perspective.

As we parent intelligent, vibrant beings, full of life and promise and acquiring wisdom every day, mothers can begin to feel underutilized, underappreciated, and overwhelmed.

When this happens, need to take a look at Jesus and what he showed his disciples.

His last task—his final act of service—was to pick up a towel, get down on his knees, and wash their feet. Tenderly, lovingly, he took each disciple’s foot into his hands, removed the grime, and soothed the blisters and calluses.

It was a lowly job, and it demonstrated the highest love. This is how precious you are to me, his simple act said.

Can you allow this verse to help you begin to see the more menial, thankless aspects of your role in a new way? I do.

Do you believe you are following Jesus’ example when you wipe runny noses, change dirty diapers, or even pick up discarded milk and juice boxes?

I believe.

As you get in your momma business, know that you are doing a very important Kingdom task.

The rewards may not come now, maybe not even in 10 years, but as soon as the seed sprouts out, you will be filled with a gladness of heart, knowing that your obedience has brought forth fruit.

Be thankful for the mundane, it’s the best path to greatness.
